When someone embarks on their homeopathic healing journey one thing’s certain: life will never seem the same again! Homeopathy is a great tool for gently releasing the past and its efficacies can be enhanced by selective use of other approaches and techniques. Personally I find myself drawn to other things at times when these will perfectly complement the issues which have surfaced for homeopathic release. In this blog I talk about an approach I was drawn to, a daily ritual I find very supportive, then I explain how I’ve personalised it to work best for me – because that’s the real key. My aim is to empower you to adopt a practice which will help you and to support you in improving its fit, so it becomes your daily friend. If you’d like to know what I did and how I made it ‘mine’ read on.
A couple of years ago I went on a very special course* during which we were encouraged to slow right down and listen carefully to what Earth was telling us, how it was supporting us with its wisdom. Each day we began our explorations by ‘calling in the directions’. A similar ritual can be found in most indigenous cultures and doubtless existed in the UK in pre-Christian times. It involves invoking support from North, South, East and West, and from the elements of earth, fire, air and water and all the spirits and beings in each place. I found this such a profound ritual yet I found it really hard to remember the ‘ingredients’. I desperately wanted to incorporate it into my life so when I got home I set about researching it, but the more I looked the more complicated it got! My breakthrough came when I read that each unique place would have its own recipe, so of course my ‘calling in the directions’ would be different from what I’d been taught somewhere else and by someone else. Here was my permission to personalise the ritual!
What I decided to do was this: I started with the 4 compass directions, gave each a page in my notebook, and under each direction I listed all the metaphorical links I could find. For example, the East is where the sun rises, so it can be thought of as symbolising beginnings (of the day, the year, life cycles etc etc) and therefore associated with the earth (new shoots) or the air (inspiration, new thoughts). As you can imagine I ended up with quite lengthy, diverse lists for each direction! I selected what made most sense to me from each list, and this is what I ended up with:
Compass direction | element | Action / quality of thought |
EAST | air | inspiration |
SOUTH | Fire | Ignition, getting things done |
WEST | Water | Reflection, flow |
NORTH | Earth | Balance, wisdom |
My research also uncovered another 3 directions: above, below and around, linked respectively to universal spirit, my ancestors (only choosing the wise, willing and well ancestors) and my present moment. Adding these enabled me to feel support from these added dimensions, as well as protecting myself and my energies from any strong influences which might pull me off track during the day.
Starting with the East, where the sun rises, and literally facing each direction in turn, I find this ritual very affirming. The way I’ve linked direction with element and action makes sense to me, and because of that I now have no problem remembering it from start to finish! And, to conclude, I say thank you by offering rainwater from my water butt to my garden, the bird baths and my tiny pond.
Whether you think I’m talking to myself or to forces greater than myself is another conversation: the act of focusing on how I intend my day to play out is, I find, a great way of settling into my day. If my description has ignited a tiny spark, helped you see a way to start your day, then please just have a go, you can alter anything at any point, it’s your ritual!
