Homeopathy and emotional triggers

  • Are you someone who takes offence at an innocent comment and sulks for days?

  • Do you only hear the 1% constructive criticism and ignore the 99% positive?

  • Do your family and friends tiptoe round you on eggshells, never sure how you’ll react?

If you answered yes to any of those questions the chances are you’ve been labelled “sensitive”, and I bet that label doesn’t feel positive! Doesn’t it feel just like another criticism! Don’t people realise you’re trying your hardest? How dare they claim the upper hand with this insult! It’s like they’ve plunged in the knife then twisted it. I know; I understand; that incredibly sensitive person used to be me as well. So, what’s going on here? And how come I’ve said it used to be me – surely there’s no way out of this paranoid character assassination black hole? I’m going to explain how I see what’s going on, and what the way out can be….. Let me share my story, or rather my mother’s, because it started with her not me. Mum grew up during the second world war without a father because he was a prisoner of war for many years. When he eventually came home it was as if he’d had a personality transplant: he was determined his family should move up the social ladder, and he knew how to achieve this because he’d been able to watch officers at close quarters in his PoW camp. He just wanted the best for his family, but being on the receiving end of constant instructions, rules, rebukes meant my mum was in constant fear of criticism and chastisement. From her perspective she was being bullied and nagged, and could do nothing right, ever. That’s a recipe for low self-esteem and can you see where the extreme sensitivity comes in? It’s no wonder, is it! While Mum’s upbringing was no different from a lot of people’s, the impact it had on her was huge – and that’s what matters: she was traumatised. My poor sensitive mum took in all this criticism, and it shaped who she became and how she lived. So, how can that happen? The sustained low-level abuse my mum suffered created a big enough effect in her body that it left an imprint in her energy field, and once it’s there it stays there! You’d think it’d fade with time but surprisingly it doesn’t seem to, and my experience as a homeopath suggests this imprint can be passed from one generation to the next, as big as the day it first appeared, programming you to react in a particular way whenever you meet a similar trauma again. So, back to Mum’s story: along came little sensitive me, exploding into the world as a highly emotional, tantruming toddler! I’d inherited Mum’s trauma. As anyone who’s been around a highly sensitive toddler knows, the explosive emotions can happen at the drop of a hat, in response to anything and everything! What happens is that our bodies are incredibly clever and hard-wired to keep us safe. The trauma-based patterning therefore tends to over-generalise; instead of being reserved for serious, near-death events, our system gets tricked into reacting to every slight event which is vaguely similar! So, we, the sensitive ones, are constantly preparing to be prostrated with grief /be seriously victimised/ die /be left. But this over-generalisation by our nervous systems really isn’t helpful when it comes to sustaining normal relationships with friends and family – and its often close family who get the brunt of these outbursts. So, what’s the way out? Homeopathy has some fantastic remedies to support highly sensitive people of whatever age. Would you believe there are remedies which work specifically on emotional traits such as:

  • Harking back to unpleasant events, never letting these go

  • Exploding with rage at slight provocation

  • Unusually sensitive to personal comments

  • Not responding well to consolation

  • Bursting into tears easily and in inappropriate contexts

There are also remedies which work specifically with particular emotional traumas such as:

  • Rejection

  • Abandonment

  • Abuse

  • Guilt

  • Bullying

Slowly and gently, by working on both the underlying causes of the trauma and the way it manifests in behaviours, your body can be supported to let go of this patterning and relax into a healthier way of reacting. You’ll notice I haven’t named particular remedies in this article; that’s because there is absolutely no way this type of homeopathic work is suitable for self-help prescribing! It’s one of the areas in which I specialise, and I’d love to talk with anyone who’s resonated with these issues to provide more details about the relief they might experience through working with me. You too can reclaim the positives in being sensitive: why not book a clarity call to explore further!
