The story of the reluctant homeopath

The other day someone asked me what made me become a homeopath. I had to think very hard! I could easily talk about my first encounter with homeopathy, but what had made me take the next step? OK, it wasn’t a step it was a giant leap! What had made me give up my university career to retrain as a homeopath?
I think it was my London homeopath who encouraged all her clients to buy a homeopathic first aid kit. She did this so, when we rang her between appointments for help with minor health issues, she could tailor her advice to the remedies we had to hand. What she didn’t say was she’d only be available for one half hour slot during the week, and her phone would be so busy I’d probably never get through!
Well, with 2 very young children, hanging on the phone and waiting wasn’t practical; I decided to buy a book to teach myself homeopathy and did just that! It was a great challenge and kept my mind stimulated. It was so obvious when I’d given the right remedy: my children perked up! Their symptoms reduced or went away! It seemed like magic.
So, in July 2007 when my husband suggested I did a training course, and then a week later our homeopath suggested exactly the same thing, I reluctantly agreed to think about it and spend the next year researching the best training option to start September 2008, it would be too late to do anything starting sooner. Except it wasn’t! When I googled homeopathy training colleges there was one college still offering open days for courses starting September 2007, and the open day was the next weekend. So, I went along. You’re probably expecting me to say I was bowled over and signed up on the spot – I wasn’t. I left at the end of the presentation absolutely convinced I wouldn’t be training there, thinking I’d at least crossed one college off my list.
My intuition had other ideas, though. When I woke up the next morning my first thought was, “That’s the place you’re going to train”. And I always make a point of listening to my waking thought, it tends to be spot on. So, despite my initial reservations and my desire to carefully research all the options before committing, I rang up and signed up. And the money I’d just earned doing consultancy magically paid for the course.
So, the week my younger daughter started full-time at school, I started studying part-time at The College of Practical Homeopathy, and in July 2011 I qualified with a Licentiate Certificate in Homeopathy. What I learned was an exciting, flexible, intuitive approach to homeopathy which embraces modern challenges easily. It’s empowered me with an understanding of homeopathic principles so the way I work can develop as I meet new ideas.
Who’d have thought a little blue box of remedies would have been SO impactful? Now, I meet lots of people who love using their remedy kit and don’t find themselves training as a homeopath, it’s not compulsory! A remedy kit’s a fantastic way to support your body through everyday health niggles, gently nudging it back into balance and encouraging it towards increased vitality. And that’s how your body wants to be – balanced and responsive to challenges. If you’d like to take the next step and get a remedy kit, I’m sure your body will thank you. Hit reply and ask me any questions or have a look at this video of what’s in one of these fantastic little boxes.
HAVE YOU HAD THE COLD?Tips for sinus support

You know, the one which starts off like a normal cold then goes into your sinuses and stays there for
ages –
weeks or even months of feeling blocked up and having a cough which just won’t go away. The cough feels like it’s coming from your chest, but the GP says your chest’s clear, and it’s often worst in the morning just after you’ve got up, then picks up again in the evening.
We have 4 sets of sinuses, 2 which are quite well known – above and below our eyes, which quite often feel tender or hurt when you bend down and up again. We have two more sets which are at the root of the nose, right behind where the nose joins onto the head. These 2 sets don’t tend to drain down our noses, they drain down our throats causing post-nasal drip, making us cough and want to clear our throats all the time.
Homeopathy has some fantastic sinus remedies to support your body coming back into balance. Yes, it’s difficult to tell the difference between these remedies, and it’s likely that a combination of 2 or 3 of them will be most effective. Helios or any other homeopathic pharmacy will make you up a combination remedy if you ask them to, it’s cheaper than getting 3 separate phials and mixing them yourself.
Hydrastis 3X:
Burning sensation in the nose, coming from watery mucus which makes the inside of the nose feel raw. Thick yellow-green catarrh which is hard to shift. Sinus headache, fullness over the eyes, sneezing, postnasal drip.
Kali bich 30C:
Pain at the root of the nose with a feeling of pressure. Watery mucus with thick, stringy sticky, smelly yellow-green catarrh; nose feels blocked. Thick post-nasal drip, much need to clear throat. Violent sneezing, worse in the morning; loss of sense of smell.
Lycopodium 6C:
Blocked nose yet acute sense of smell, breathes through mouth. Thick yellow catarrh, runny mucus, blows nose a lot. Sore pimples on tip of nose. None of these remedies is in the 18-remedy kit! If that’s what you’ve got, I suggest trying
Nux vomica
(much sneezing, feels blocked up)
,
Pulsatilla
(pain over eyes, root of nose, better outdoors, bland yellow catarrh with bad smell) or
Silica
(sore, sensitive, dry, blocked nose; hard crusts form inside nose)
The postnasal sinuses can be chronically ‘drippy’ and, if you’ve already recognised yourself or someone you know as having this picture, you’re likely to have tried many things and found this problem hard to shift. It is! You may well need some other support as well. Have a look at this video for some tips and information about what’s happening.
