Homeopathy and Old Age

Have you ever gone through phases when you can’t remember people’s names? I have, and I’m in a bad one of these phases at the moment.

I was talking to a friend recently and told her I’d suddenly stopped being able to remember names when my mum died.

“Oh that’s just old age,” she said, “everyone gets like that”.

Yes, undoubtedly, it happens more as people get older – but what also happens as we get older?

We get bad news more often

Our friends and family become unwell and die more often

We tend to anticipate our own deaths

Death is inevitable, it’s the only thing which is certain from the moment of our birth! At some point we will all die: we don’t know when or how, but we know we will. And, if my experience is anything to go by, when there’s a sudden change in memory / mobility / strength / energy, I wonder if it’s shock and other associated traumas which are the true cause of this aging?

Can homeopathy provide support for these sudden changes? Yes it can, as it can for any other trauma: it’s a case of matching up the changed symptoms with a remedy which has not only those symptoms as part of its ‘personality’, but also ‘ailments from bad news’, ‘ailments from anticipation’ or ‘ailments from emotional shock’.

Have a look at these 3 remedy personalities and you’ll see what I mean:

Gelsemium

Symptoms slowly develop after a shock or around anticipation of bad news

Drowsy; feels paralysed/heavy/sluggish/trembling/weak; nervous exhaustion, needs to lie down; wants to be alone but hates isolation; dread of forthcoming ordeals; blurred/double vision; flu

Ignatia

Sensitive, emotional, moody, reserved but sudden outbursts of emotion; hiccups, spasmodic cough, migraine, nausea, fainting, temporary paralysis/numbness; deep sighing/yawning; physical symptoms which are paradoxical eg sore throat better for swallowing solid food, worse for swallowing saliva; sensation of a lump in the throat; urine retention; light sleeping/insomnia.

Aconite

Sudden start of symptoms after a fright or mental shock.

Very restless; panic attacks with palpitations; sudden intense pains or flushes; colic with wind; nightmares/insomnia; sensitive and intolerant of noise/light/being touched; headache; colds.

And the beauty of using homeopathy in this way is that many elderly people are on a large number of medications, and these remedies will support without the potential of adding more side effects to the mix.

My journey towards being a Soul Midwife

Towards the end of last year, I found out there was such a thing as a Soul Midwife. It’s someone who is specially trained to support a person and their family in the lead-up to, and through, their dying time - the equivalent of a birth midwife but at the other end of our time on earth. I was immediately drawn to undertake this training, and I’m very glad I did as it gave me confidence in supporting my mum through her final days. Here’s the video I made where I talk about what drew me to soul midwifery.

Before I can qualify fully and call myself a Soul Midwife, I will be undertaking a period of being mentored and writing up case studies. I’ve put all that on hold so far, a newly grieving person isn’t best placed to provide support for others, but over the next few months I will be moving forward with this. If you know anyone who’s coming towards their dying time and would appreciate some support (free) in return for helping me complete my training then please put them in touch with me, I’d really appreciate that.

3 of the best travel sickness remedies

With the holiday season creeping up on us I thought you might like to be reminded about 3 great homeopathic remedies which have a reputation for supporting symptoms of travel sickness:

You feel so MUCH BETTER with FRESH AIR on your face, STAYING STILL watching the horizon ahead. You feel WORSE in a STUFFY ROOM, or if you have to MOVE ABOUT. Try TABACUM.

You feel so sick and dizzy that ALL YOU WANT TO DO IS LIE DOWN AND SLEEP. Try COCCULUS.

Even though you feel sick YOU REALLY WANT TO EAT, AND IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER. Try PETROLEUM.

Don’t forget to let me know how you got on with these remedies!
